About

The mission

Forecast Dakotas is the definitive portal for North and South Dakota's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean, and highway-clear for all 119 counties, from the Red River Valley and the Coteau across the Missouri to the Badlands, the Black Hills and Black Elk Peak.

Two states, one weather map. The Dakotas share a border no storm has ever noticed: the same Alberta clipper crosses both, the same ground blizzard closes I-94 and I-90 on the same afternoon, and I-29 runs the length of both states through the valley that floods every spring. West of the Missouri the ground climbs and the weather changes with it — in both states, at the same longitude. Forecast Dakotas is built around that shared geography rather than the state line through the middle of it.

The design language

The look borrows from the American Interstate system — the reflective paper, the green guide signs, the blue service signs, the brown recreation signs, and the red-white-and-blue route shields — set in Overpass, the typeface drawn from the Highway Gothic lettering on those signs. The Dakotas take a dry prairie paper and a prairie sage accent, on short-grass green — their own note in the network.

Metro & region sites

Dakotas is covered close-up by 2 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastdakotas.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast Dakotas, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

The Dakotas have live neighbors on every side: Forecast Montana up the Yellowstone at Wibaux and the Missouri at Fairview, Forecast Wyoming off the southwest corner below Belle Fourche, Forecast Minnesota across the Red River, Forecast Iowa off the southeast corner at Big Sioux Point, Forecast Nebraska the length of the South Dakota line, and Forecast Canada over the line in Manitoba and Saskatchewan — all tinted in their own accent on the hero map and clickable from it. The rest of the Forecast <State> network is part of the same system
